Maureen Farrell

Maureen began her art career while still working full time near Albany, NY. She first learned composition in photography courses. She then took a beginners course in watercolor and it was love at first sight. Having taken several watercolorclasses she had the very good fortune to find Karen Rosasco, a retired high school art teacher, living and teaching nearby. Karen was not only an excellent teacher, but also a mentor, encouraging her to take workshops from national and international artists, enter shows and venture beyond pure watercolor. Over a period of years, Maureen collected a large library of books and videos covering design, color, etc., and studied them intensively. The hard work and classes paid off and she began winning ribbons and being accepted into juried shows. This early recognition was highly encouraging and helped give her the confidence to continue.

After retirement to Cambridge, on the eastern shore of Maryland, she was able to devote far more time to her art and was welcomed by the local art community as a serious professional. Before and after retirement she worked primarily in watercolor, trying to put her love of figures, flowers and landscapes into paintings. At various times, she ventured into more impressionistic paintings using watercolor on gesso and other media, demonstrating a strong talent for evoking emotion, even in abstracts. She has since begun working with various watermedia, focusing on abstracts with a hint of realism. She finds the new works have given her the freedom to allow things to “happen” on the paper, without any preconceived ideas, reviving the excitement she felt at her first water color demo.
